In 2005, a local organization named Comfort Area Foundation conducted a "needs" survey within the Comfort community. Their findings: Comfort needs more youth recreational facilities. The above action was soon followed by the diligent work of a gathering of local concerned persons, and an organization was born March 2006 named the Comfort Area Youth Commission, with a 501 (c)(3) tax exempt identification with YOUTH as the only reason for their existence. Their mission statement:
- To establish a welcoming, safe, environment for all our Comfort Youth
- To provide for after school fun, learning, and bonding under the mentoring leadership of Comfort High School student volunteers with adult supervision
- To establish, expand or improve recreational facilities throughout the community to serve our youth
The commission, referred to as CAYC, turned to the Comfort community to seek support and they quickly received help. An anonymous donor presented CAYC a beginning financial of $15,000 in matching funds and CAYC launched into a flurry of activities. Two outdoor basketball courts were built at Altgelt football field. Soccer fields were established at the Gaddis Methodist church on Highway 87 and one at Eighth and Broadway. CAYC was instrumental leading to the lighting project of our Little League complex. An after school program for youth was begun and Immanuel Lutheran Church offered their vacant parsonage so that after school programs could begin immediately. The Lutherans went even further to support CAYC in that the church offered to pay for the utilities of this building that CAYC soon called THE CATS DEN. Early on, fundraisers were held at the Comfort community park and were exceptionally successful for a community the size of Comfort. However, it quickly became obvious that more funding was needed to support all the projects and dreams of CAYC. A "Letter of Query" was sent to the local Kronkosky Foundation and it was there that CAYC was counseled to contact the Boy's and Girl's Club in Fredericksburg, that they might assist CAYC in initiating an after school program and that perhaps CAYC might share in their vast funding resources.
